“I use my unique visual vocabulary of color, shape, line and mark to interpret the places my passions take me. Through my paintings, I strive to pass along the spirit of this
inspiration.”
The colorful work of Lance Whitner is infused with elements of the natural world. Lance finds inspiration in the landscapes her passions take her; hiking in the mountains, skiing in the trees, working in the garden or out at the barn with the horses. Her paintings show her interest in color and patterns found in nature.
Lance begins a painting with a charcoal sketch, laying out a loose composition. She then adds color and continues working in an intuitive process, moving between focused and spontaneous mark making, responding to the dialogue between color, shape, line as the painting evolves. She loves coming to the place in her work when mark making becomes meditative.
Born in North Carolina, Lance traveled west to earn a BFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She now lives with her husband, 3 kids and several animals in a purple house in
Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
